How Many Diapers + Wipes Should You Order To Meet Your Baby’s Needs?

Congrats! Your baby will be here soon. Meanwhile the nesting instinct has kicked into overdrive and you are looking around trying to figure out where to get started. Diapers and wipes are essential baby items. While each baby is different, you can predict roughly how many diapers and wipes you will need as your baby grows. First of all, diapers come in multiple sizes that are determined by the baby’s weight.

There is no definitive answer for exactly how many diapers you will need for each size. You can however count on babies going through a minimum amount of diapers and wipes. The exception to this rule can be the first two sizes Preemie & Newborn. If your baby is born prematurely the number of diapers you will need will depend entirely on how premature the baby is and how quickly they grow. Newborn babies brought to term can also weigh anywhere from 6-10 LBS. That is a wide range. The heavier babies are at birth, the less newborn diapers they will need until they reach the next size up. Unless your baby is extremely large or small for their age, sizes 1-4 will take your baby up to about 2 to 2.5 years old. The minimum amount of diapers you will use for those sizes are fairly predictable.

And if you are going through that many diapers, you might be wondering how many wipes you will need to go along with all those diaper changes. You’ll need a lot of sturdy, convenient baby wipes ready to tackle messes, triumph over spills, and keep your little one fresh and content throughout the long haul.

The average baby will need 2-3 wipes per wet diaper and 7-10 wipes per soiled diaper. Multiply that by 4-6 wet and 1-3 dirty diapers a day and you’ll need 15-48 wipes per day, 105-336 wipes per week, or 420-1,344 wipes per month — just for diaper changes. This does not even include cleaning hands and faces that seem to be always dirty.

Some factors that can increase the use of wipes include:

  • age: younger babies require more frequent diaper changes and cleaning of sticky fingers
  • diet: introducing solids may result in more frequent and messier diaper changes
  • activity: babies may need more frequent cleanups during playtime
  • weather: the heat in Barbados means may need a few extra wipes to clean skin folds and wipe away sweat
  • teething: increased drool means more frequent face and hand wipe-downs
  • out and about: longer outings or travel may require more wipes for on-the-go clean-ups

Like diapers, when it comes to wipes it is better to have too many than not enough. Imagine dealing with a diaper blowout and not having enough wipes. Yikes! We estimate you should have at least 5 wipes for each diaper you buy.

To facilitate this we have created Diaper + Wipes Bundles to help you get through each diaper size change. You can choose your favourite brand or request a brand that we do not currently stock.
